RECESSION JOB SEARCH HAWAII 101
-
Hawaii is not as complex as the mainland when it comes to looking for a job. We do have counties but traveling to the outer islands is usually a tall order so most kamaaina stick to the island that they live on. Since the recession has limited opportunity here in Hawaii I have come up with a few tips to help you in your job search here in Hawaii.
1. Do not limit yourself. If your occupation has few jobs consider alternate positions or parallel type jobs. I.E. If you are a Human Resources Manager then consider Office Management or other Administrative jobs.
2. Consider lesser roles or entry level. A step down is not always a good thing but with limited management positions it may be your only move.
3. Take the old school approach. What is the old school approach you ask? Send out hard copy resumes, make phone calls, visit employers in person. Email is not always the best thing and with every candidate emailing their resume standing out is your only way in.
4. Network with other professionals on Linkedin.com or other websites. Ask for referrals.
5. Use local job websites such as www.helpwantedhawaii.info or www.hawaiijobsondemand.com .
6. Explain your employment gaps in your resume and be honest about your current situation. Employers know the job market so they understand a majority of candidates are facing similar challenges now.
7. Practice your interviewing skills, (Role play with a friend) Be confident but not too boastful or an ego. Ask questions and avoid saying "UMMMMMMMM" or looking away.
8. Ask your interviewer what the next steps are? When are you going to select a candidate?
9. Be reasonable when asked about your salary requirements. Hawaii is about 10-15% lower then our mainland counterparts so you can state a figure or answer " I am open to any reasonable offer for this position".
10. Be patient, If your looking for a job in Hawaii it may take a bit longer. You never want your impatient side to come out during an interview.
Finally if your losing faith just remember that you can work any job just to pay the bills. Your tenacity will pay off as long as you stay focused, think positive, and be honest with yourself.
